E. Hydrolysis

Reaction between a compound and water which results in the making or breaking of the O-H bonds of water. Example: the reaction of hydrogen chloride and water to give hydrochloric acid, section 12-3. However, the term is more commonly used for reactions resulting in the breaking of O-H bonds of water and the formation of a bond between the O of the water and the compound.
