The 48th Chemistry Olympiad Competition was held in Georgia in July 2016 and involved a team of four students representing New Zealand. The 49th Chemistry Olympiad will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, in July 2017.

Each year a group of around 90-100 secondary school students is selected to form a Training Group. The selection is based upon performance in a selection test held at the end of October, or the beginning of November. The selection test assumes knowledge of only Year 12 (NCEA Level 2) Chemistry. The 2017 Training Group selection will be held on Monday 31 October 2016.

To be eligible, students must be under 20 and not intending to attend University in 2017.  Students must have been attending a New Zealand school for at least two years prior to July 2017. Any student who attended the 2016 NZCHO training camp in April, and still meets the other criteria, will get automatic selection to the training group. They will still need to register their interest.

To enter the 49th (2017) Olympiad competition, the teacher and students must register by Friday 7 October 2016:

The teacher in charge must register on-line at http://www.chem.canterbury.ac.nz/olympiad/forms/teacher-registration.shtml with the names of any students who meet the above criteria. The test papers will be sent to this teacher who will have responsibility for administering the test.

Each student must also register on-line at http://www.chem.canterbury.ac.nz/olympiad/forms/student-registration.shtml before 7 October 2016. Students must pay an entry fee of $30 by direct credit into:

During term one, the training group undergo a training program which includes reading material, problem assignments, and a test in early March. From the test, 30 students are chosen in mid-March for a training camp to be held in the April school break, 18-23 April 2017.
