Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD provides an opportunity to undertake a substantial research project. A minimum of two years full time research is required but typically the time taken to complete a PhD project is 3 to 4 years. Candidates must submit brief written progress reports approximately six months and twelve months from the date of registration and thereafter at six monthly intervals. The Chemistry Department also requires candidates to deliver a formal seminar early in the second year of the PhD programme and a final seminar before submission of the thesis at the conclusion of the research programme. A wide selection of research topics is available.

The prerequisite for enrolment as a PhD candidate is a BSc(Hons) or MSc degree with second class honours or better. A limited number of Department Teaching Assistantships are available to PhD students and these assist with financial support. Enquiries should be made to the Director of Postgraduate Studies.
